If you’re going to do something you might as well do it the right way. Cleaning your garage correctly can make the whole process more streamline, help you organize your things, make it easier for you to find items in the future, and better maintain your clean garage over time.
Step 1: Get the items you need. Make sure you have a broom, dustpan and brush, garbage bags, duct tape for labels, a sharpie, large plastic bins and gloves. If you plan of throwing away a bunch of items you should consider renting a dumpster.
Step 2: Remove everything you can from your garage. This allows you to see how much space you have and prepare yourself to better organize yourself. As you remove your items you should put similar items together such as tools, gardening equipment, holiday decorations, food, etc…
Step 3: Clean up a little. Yes, it’s a garage but dust, grime and debris piles up over the years so a little sweeping isn’t a bad idea. Use the brush and dustpan for shelves.
Step 4: Sift through your items separating the junk from stuff your going to keep. If you rented a dumpster, you can discard of the junk in your dumpster.
Step 5: Put similar items you plan on keeping in the plastic bins you purchased. You should label your bins on the side and top of the bin using the duct tape and sharpie. So, for example put your holiday decorations for Halloween in one bin and your Christmas decorations in another. You should group these bins next to each other when you put them back into your garage.
Step 6: Once you box up as much as you can and put back the boxes continue to put back items that can not fix into boxes such as large equipment or items that just don’t make sense to box up because you use them often.
Step 7: Always put things back after you use it. The more you maintain your newly organized garage the less frequent you have to clean it again.
